Morning Person is a weekly newsletter packed with obsessively-curated recommendations and ideas—let’s get to it!
🎥 The Power of the Dog on Netflix: In 1925 Montana, brothers Phil (Benedict Cumberbatch) and George (Jesse Plemons) maintain their parents’ ranch with expected male gusto, until George brings home his new wife Rose (played by Plemons’ actual wife, Kirsten Dunst) and her teenage son. The film builds with sexual tension and toxic displays of masculinity, until the heartbreak that drives Phil’s meanness is revealed. Though I streamed it on Netflix, I imagine the sweeping shots of Montana (played by New Zealand) would be even better in theaters.
🎧 Maintenance Phase Podcast: I first learned about this podcast, which debunks the science behind health fads, through a link to their “Is Being Fat Bad For You?” episode in Anne Helen Petersen’s excellent “Culture Studies” newsletter. Every episode, hosted by Michael Hobbes and Aubrey Gordon, is carefully-researched and (importantly) funny. I highly recommend following a similar rabbithole I did, with “The Body Mass Index,” “Moon Juice,” and their two-part episode on Rachel Hollis, each of which were insightful and entertaining.
