📚 Trust by Domenico Starnone: On the verge of breaking up, Pietro and Teresa trade secrets so awful both of their lives would be ruined if either secret came out, “We can never split up now, we’re really beholden to each other.” When they do inevitably break up and Pietro eventually marries Nadia, he’s overcome with paranoia that his secret will come out. Artfully translated from the original Italian by Jhumpa Lahiri (whose own memoir is slated for publish later this year), the book sometimes reads like a long poem rather than the short novel it is. (For lit nerds: There are rumors that Elena Ferrante may be Domenico Starnone’s pen name??)
🎧 Another Michael’s Album “New Music and Big Pop”: As much as I enjoyed the trio’s EP “Land” in 2018, their latest album captures a mood better suited for January. It’s moody and cozy; maybe a bit reminiscent of Bon Iver (at least with the moody harmonies in “New Music”) and Pinegrove. It was the perfect soundtrack for Jonah and my recent snowy getaway. Also enjoying this Hippo Campus EP, which has Vampire Weekend vibes, and The Lumineers’ new album, “BRIGHTSIDE.”
