Morning Person is a weekly newsletter packed with obsessively-curated recommendations and ideas—let’s get to it!
🎥 ‘Windfall’ on Netflix: This clever, suspenseful film unravels like a play when a man (referred to only as “Nobody” and played by Jason Segel) breaks into the Montecito vacation home of a billionaire (Jesse Plemons) and his wife (Lily Collins), who unexpectedly arrive mid-robbery. It’s reminiscent of a Hitchcock film, with a held tension similar to ‘Rear Window’ or ‘Rope,’ and complicated group dynamics that build to an ending I genuinely didn’t see coming. I was surprised to see that some reviews have slammed it for its slow, highly stylized pace since that’s exactly what I loved so much about it.
🎧 Hailey Whitters’ Album, ‘Raised’: I love a female country musician who pushes the boundaries so when Hailey Whitter’s album came out last month, I immediately downloaded it for my transatlantic flight. The album is bookended by a tongue-in-cheek allusion to the phrase “when pigs fly,” that might be a reference to the decade-plus she spent in Nashville waiting for her songwriting break. Between, it’s full of hits that harken back to early 2000s country.
