🎧 “What Happened to Sandy Beal” Podcast: In 1977, teenager Sandy Beal was found shot to death in her car. It was ruled as a suicide, but her mother always assumed that the police were hiding something. In this podcast, journalist Melissa Jeltsen unravels the cold case through interviews with Sandy’s family and the clues she left behind. I haven’t felt this captivated by a crime podcast since the first season of “Serial.”
📚 Sea of Tranquility by Emily St. John Mandel: In the early 20th century, Edwin, a British ex-pat, experiences a vision in a Vancouver forest that seems to bend time. It’s a humble start to a book that quickly picks up and proceeds to weave through centuries, including a moon colony four-hundred years in the future that holds the key to Edwin’s forest vision. Although it’s not necessary to have read her previous novels, Mandel’s inclusion of past characters (like Vincent from The Glass Hotel) mimicked the unsettling feeling of deja vu, and made it feel all the more immersive as I listened to the audiobook. This one will appeal to anyone who loved Cloud Cuckoo Land, The Overstory, and Cloud Atlas.
