📚 Neruda on the Park by Cleyvis Natera: I was lucky enough to get my hands on an advance copy of Neruda on the Park from Cleyvis, who I met years ago when she co-organized an anti-racism festival (you may recall her interview on Morning Person here). I remember speaking with her about her novel when we first met, and have been chomping at the bit for its launch so I can share it with you! Neruda takes place in a Dominican part of New York City, which is in the midst of a dramatic transformation by gentrification. When Luz Guerrero begins dating a white developer at the helm of the neighborhood’s new apartment building (the namesake for the novel), her mother creates a dangerous plan to raise crime and deter potential renters. Told through intersecting perspectives, including a Greek chorus of neighborhood gossips, the story is a richly layered narrative about attachment to a place and intergenerational divides.
🎧 “This Morning Walk” Podcast: It wasn’t until I adopted my dog Toast in 2020 that I began walking several times a day, a simple routine that completely changed me. This podcast, hosted by Alex Elle and Libby Delana, is devoted to the transformative power of morning walks. At twenty minutes an episode, it’s the perfect accompaniment to a quick stroll.
