📺 “Love on the Spectrum: U.S. Edition” on Netflix: This U.S. spinoff of the Australian documentary-style series follows adults on the Autism spectrum as they navigate the unpredictable world of dating, often for the first time. I wasn’t sure what to expect when I started it on Friday, but was blown away by how tenderly it captures the confusion and vulnerability that goes into finding a partner. Each individual is so compelling and refreshingly genuine that I found myself instantly invested in their stories (and stayed up far too late watching it). As a friend put it, “My heart literally feels lighter after ten minutes of watching it.”
🎧 “Unreal: A Critical History of Reality TV” Podcast: Love it or hate it, reality television plays a pivotal role in both shaping and mirroring-back societal perceptions of beauty, dating, aspirations, and even neurodivergency (see above). This well-researched ten-part series explores the controversial format, and the pivotal role it’s played in our culture. The entire series is worth a listen, but I particularly enjoyed the episode on scripted reality shows, which looks at my first reality loves, “Laguna Beach” and “The Hills.”
