Issue #49: If I Could Only Recommend One Book

Morning Person is a weekly newsletter packed with obsessively-curated recommendations and ideas—let’s get to it!

🎥 Not Okay on Hulu: Danni Sanders (Zoey Deutch) is a direct product of a social media-obsessed culture and will do anything to be noticed. When her plan to fake a trip to Paris with Photoshopped ‘grams coincides with a string of terrorist attacks on the city, she becomes a poster girl for “surviving trauma,” despite the fact she was never there. The movie is an over-the-top satire on privilege and fame grounded by the actual survivors Danni meets in her support group, but it’s also not so far from reality (see the documentary “Fake Famous,” which explores the lengths to which people go for followers). Could be a spinoff of Ingrid Goes West—a fun, cringey watch that will make you want to throw your phone into the ocean.

🎧 “Into It” Podcast: Culture writer Sam Sanders’s’ new podcast for Vulture is all about the stuff we obsess over and how to “obsess over it better.” As someone who is conversational, but nowhere near fluent, in pop culture, I wasn’t sure it would appeal to me, but it feels like an audio version of New York Magazine’s approval matrix, with a deep dive into topics like the business of Beyoncé. Will appeal to fans of “Still Processing,” (highbrow/brilliant), but in the lower-right quadrant (lowbrow/brilliant), with new episodes each Thursday!
