🎥 ‘Call Jane’ in theaters and ‘The Janes’ on HBO Max: Although ‘Call Jane’ takes place in 1960s Chicago, it’s difficult not to watch it without feeling like it’s a peek into the new-future (and, in many states, the present). When Joy (Elizabeth Banks) develops a life-threatening condition while pregnant, she is told, by male doctors, that an abortion is impossible, even though it will save her life. Enter: The Jane Collective, a real group of women who helped 11,000 women secure safe, illegal abortions. If ‘Call Jane’ doesn’t succeed in firing you up, follow it up with the HBO documentary on the real women in the group, ‘The Janes.’ I’m also excited to see… ‘Causeway,’ which came out Friday and stars Jennifer Lawrence. 📚 Acting Class by Nick Drnaso: To graphic novelist Nick Drnaso, even the most mundane daily moments can be imbued with humor and meaning. In his latest book, Acting Class, ten people attend a community workshop to get in touch with their creative sides. After the requisite cringe-worthy introduction class, we get to know each attendee (a single mother, a couple looking to reignite a spark, etc.) as they get to know each other. It’s darkly funny and Drnaso uses the medium to blur the lines of what is real and what is imaginary. If you’re looking to get into graphic novels, the one I recommended here is another great introduction to the genre!
