I’m writing this from the living room in my parents’ house in Reno, listening to my mom and my aunt, who’s visiting from L.A., chatting in the next room. It’s nearly three in the afternoon, but I finally excused myself from a long brunch of pancakes, fruit, and bottomless mugs of my favorite black tea to get some work done and check my email. Toast is asleep next to me, exhausted from the hike we snuck in this morning. Time feels flexible in a way it hasn’t in weeks, where every second counted as I finished my summer semester, moved apartments, and initiated the process of buying my house.
Home hasn’t always felt so relaxing—for years, my mom and I had a difficult relationship—but time can be a balm. We’ve both been healing, and this trip has felt like medicine in the midst of a hectic year (I’m excited to share a conversation I had with my mom in an upcoming issue).
