For sanity’s sake, I’m just going to say the new year begins two weeks from now. Until then, I’m entirely in preparation mode, getting my life back together from three months on the road and a less-than restful holiday season.
When I sprained my ankle in Big Sur last month, I had to make the difficult call to head to my parents’ house in Reno a week early for the holidays. It had been at least a decade since I’d spent longer than a weekend in my hometown, and the combination of challenging family dynamics paired with an inability to exercise left my nervous system totally fried over the course of my two weeks there. My insomnia came back full-bore, I fell behind on work, and I felt sluggish, uninspired, and dysregulated the longer I went without movement.
I’ve only been back in Portland for a day, after spending New Year’s with friends at a cabin near Mt. Hood (lots of hot pot and hikes!), but I am already so happy to be back home. My plan is to stay here for the next two weeks, with a quick trip this weekend, as I realign and reset. Maybe you’re feeling similarly? I’m thinking of it as my ‘New Year Reset.’
