I’ve spent the better part of the last two years learning and talking about addiction. The process of earning my master’s in mental health and addiction counseling shined a light on my own relationship with alcohol (and ambition) and many of my friends and clients are in recovery. When I applied to my program three years ago, it was with the intention of creating an intervention for the rampant social media addiction I recognized while working in lifestyle media in L.A. I hit the ground running on my thesis, working on an app-based intervention that drew from theories rooted in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, but by the end of my first semester, my efforts felt laughably small. I felt like I was creating a band-aid when the root of addiction often goes much, much deeper.
