The Sunday Edition is Tuesday’s little sister—off-the-cuff updates I’d bring up over a coffee catch-up with a friend
The friends I’ve made in my counseling program are unlike anyone I’ve ever met in my life. We’re a motley crew of different ages, genders, and backgrounds with a bond that feels akin to magic. At this point in our program, we’re all in very different places with conflicting schedules (I’m taking the year off, one lives across the country, and the rest are interning at different sites) so finding time to be together feels all the more rare and important these days. This week, we took a friends’ trip to see LCD Soundsystem in Bend, Oregon, which filled my cup to the brim. I’ll be sharing more about our trip, including photos and a full guide to Bend very soon. Until then, here are some favorite (and painful) moments from my week, plus a gift (!).
Recipes from my book. Anytime I come across a recipe in a novel or memoir, I try to find time to make it—it’s one of my favorite ways to immerse myself in story, and combine my love of books and food. When writing my novel You’re Safe Here, I had so much fun imagining what my characters were eating (in 2060, no less!). Kirkus Reviews even pointed this out. They wrote, “The novel is happiest when preparing and serving futuristic meals.” To celebrate the release in one month, I’m sharing an exclusive PDF with two recipes from You’re Safe Here to anyone who preorders my book! It includes an adaptogenic morning latte that appears on the first page and introduces you to Maggie, and a vegetarian sandwich that the billionaire founder Emmett serves, subtly signaling the extent of her wealth. I wrote more about why I placed each recipe in the book (without huge spoilers)—and how you can recreate each yourself as you read it! Just fill out the Google Form here or forward your preorder confirmation to youresafeherebook@gmail.com and I’ll personally email the recipes to you!
