📚 Wild Dark Shore by Charlotte McConaghey: I feel like I spent last week straddling two worlds—mine and the completely immersive universe McConaghey creates on Shearwater, a tiny research island that’s home to a father and his three children, as well as a small research base, seed bank, pod of fur seals, and penguins. The family is preparing to leave—rising sea levels have made their island uninhabitable—when a mysterious woman washes up on their shore, badly battered from a shipwreck. Grateful to the reader who recommended this to me in one of our Plant Studies Zoom conversations! x

🎥 ‘F1,’ in theaters: Exactly the summer blockbuster it bills itself to be, this movie has fast cars, a redemption arc, love story, and Brad Pitt. It’s formulaic, but that’s part of what makes it so satisfying and worth getting out of the heat to watch on the big screen.

📺 “We Were Liars” on Prime Video: Like McConaghey’s novel, this show also centers on a woman who washes up on a shore under mysterious circumstances. Two years later, Cadence returns to her wealthy family’s beachside summer home to uncover the secrets that led her there.

P.S. I’m bringing back Morning Person book club this month! Our July pick is Lost & Found by Kathryn Schulz. We’ll be chatting July 22nd at 5 PM PT. You can RSVP to our Zoom chat using the link below! x

I love food, but there is so much noise out there around how and what to eat that that it can completely take the joy away from eating (and the advice is constantly shifting— “More protein, no wait, that’s too much protein!”). It takes a concerted effort to have a sane and healthy relationship with food, and the line between “healthy eating” into “restrictive eating” is dangerously thin.

Throughout my twenties, I oscillated between being the girl who would eat anything, in protest of the pervasive diet culture in Los Angeles, while trying all things wellness culture, which was basically the same thing, but with cuter branding. In both iterations, I was completely cut-off from my body’s cues and often felt ill after meals. In my thirties, I’ve found a balance that celebrates my love of food in a way that also honors my body, and isn’t aiming to prove anything to anyone. My fridge and pantry are a direct reflection of that. Read on for:

  • What I generally eat in a day, and my food philosophy

  • A completely unedited look inside my fridge and freezer

  • My favorite protein powder and cookbook, and the comforting ingredients I always keep on hand

  • The world’s most delicious coconut yogurt (it’s $22 and worth it… unfortunately, I’m not kidding), and the condiment I add to every meal
