I love the Portland-specific summer items! I’m so excited for Kachka’s outdoor grill, a writer’s retreat at Lewis & Clark, and pizza at the farmers market. May/June are my favorite months in the PNW.
Hey Leslie! You mentioned wanting to grill more chicken – do you have a grill? If so, do you recommend it? I could use a little grill but have NO idea where to start. :)
That Samantha Irby article is excellent. Reminds me of a line from Liza Anne’s song Devotion (which I highly recommend if you haven’t heard it!), “I like the things I like and that’s alright”. Just let people live!
Under ICYMI - I do not recommend HeyDay Canning. It's another example, in my opinion, of great branding and a cool idea. As a legume lover, I found the results mushy with confused flavors.
Summer to-dos really got me thinking! I’m having a baby this summer so thus far it’s been lots of research on daycares and doulas. My list includes making homemade lemonade, taking my home office out to our community courtyard by the pool, hitting the Hollywood Bowl and the beach, and cleaning up the patio for dinners al fresco!
Speaking of fresh fruit compote, I LOVE rhubarb and Carla Lalli Music recently shared a CARAMEL rhubarb compote on insta! Usually I make rhubarb with some orange zest and/or grand marnier, or vanilla, but I'm excited to try this version. I also learned that roasting rhubarb preserves the color better, so if that is most appetizing to you, try that approach. After I saw you recommend the Spicy Shrimp Fragola from Colu Henry's Easy Fancy Food, I went and bought that book, and she has a recipe in there for a Rhubarb Fool which I made recently and was a big hit with my friends who are not *fruit* dessert people. If you need a recipe for roasting rhubarb, you can use that one, but it comes out VERY tart to offset the sweet meringue.
I read Elise's recent feature in The New York Times and immediately put her book on hold at the library. I didn't think to check and see if she had a podcast! Thank you for sharing.

I love your summer to-do list! I am inspired by your fruit compote suggestion for chia pudding. Can you share your favorite fruit compote recipe?
