The Sunday Edition is Tuesday’s little sister—off-the-cuff updates I’d bring up over a coffee catch-up with a friend.
A few days ago, I was surfing in Lombok and, by the time this goes live, I’ll be descending a climb from Mt. Fuji’s summit (!). The juxtaposition illustrates just how seismic the transition from Indonesia to Japan has been. After two red-eye flights, I woke up far from the land of surfer smoothie bowls, in one of the most spectacular (certainly the most over-stimulating) cities I’ve ever been to. I only had two full days in Tokyo before departing for my hike, but I packed them in, covering many meals and miles. My mom, who took the place of my boyfriend last-minute after our breakup, is holding down the fort until my return—we still have another few days in Tokyo before heading to the Kiso Valley, and there’s so much more to eat and see!
I’ll be sharing a full guide to Tokyo in the coming weeks (first up is Bali and Lombok!), but so far a few stand-outs have included the obvious like TeamLabs Planets, the Tsukiji Outer Market (before 9 am, when the tours flood in), Tsutaya Books Daikan-yama, and many, many pieces of fatty tuna nigiri. I’m also thrilled to report that the minimal packing strategy I used applies just as well to Tokyo as it did to Indonesia! Read on for some photos and highlights from the week, including the best bites I’ve eaten and new favorite bar of all time!
P.S. You can find my travel guides to Paris, New York, Los Angeles, Mexico City, and others here!
