Sunday Edition: Embracing the Darkest Parts of Winter
And practicing "instantaneous gratitude."
The Sunday Edition is Tuesday’s little sister—off-the-cuff updates I’d bring up over a coffee catch-up with a friend.
On the one hand, summer can’t come quickly enough. My raised garden beds are ready for produce. I can’t wait to walk Toast without piling on the layers and just the thought of perusing a farmers’ market for heirloom tomatoes, or cooking from my CSA, feels like distant fantasy. We’re in the hardest part of winter—the months that stretch into endless false springs—so this week I’ve been embracing the things I can only do in winter.
On Friday, I played hooky and went skiing at Mt. Hood with friends, then spent the night in a snowy A-frame (!). I’ve been adding kumquats to salads and keeping bowls of Kishu and Sumo mandarins (the best winter citrus) in my kitchen. I’ve made a concerted effort to turn “when” into “now,” enjoying movie nights on rainy evenings, trying new teas, perusing bookstores on overcast days, and hosting small, cozy dinners. It’s the snowy, overcast version of filling my cup.
