A few hours after my post went live on Tuesday morning, I received two emails, back-to-back: One from our lawyer confirming our divorce was finalized, and one from a reader. The reader had never responded to an Issue before, but she wrote to me about her divorce, which took place around the same age as mine. She shared, “My Dad gave me a piece of advice then: he said that he felt strongly that you can never know who the love of your life is until you’re much older.” Her words—which I’ve shared with her permission—hit me. They were the exact piece of wisdom I needed to read in that moment (in fact, I printed her email to fold it into my journal).

I am so touched by every one of you who has reached out and commented over the past two years—it’s created a safe space for me to share vulnerable details, and your generosity has inspired me to reach out to internet-strangers and be a better friend, since it’s taught me the impact of a few kind words, from a friend or stranger, at just the right moment.
