Recipe: The Chai-Spiced, Protein-Packed Coffee I Make Every Morning

Part of a 57 grams of protein breakfast (!).

I’ve been drinking Bulletproof Coffee with my breakfast every morning for years, with the exception of a brief moment when I attempted to curb my daily coffee habit with matcha (silly me). The swap lasted approximately two seconds since I prefer a little more caffeine, but I learned a valuable trick in the process! In my attempt to make a rich and creamy matcha, I added a collagen-rich protein powder. It was delicious, so I began adding it to the second-half of my coffee, which also helps keep me full after my morning workouts! I don’t track macros, but recently calculated my breakfast out of curiosity, and it comes to a whopping 57 grams of protein since I eat eggs and cottage cheese every day!

Here’s how it works: I drink half of my Bulletproof Coffee with my breakfast (recipe below). Then, I add the remainder to a to-go mug (this one1 is a favorite), with some hot water and protein powder, to sip while I walk my dog.

To make the Bulletproof Coffee:

  • 1 tablespoon MCT oil (work your way up, begin with a teaspoon and add little by little each day, or you may literally shit yourself, okay??)

  • 1 teaspoon high-quality ghee (I like Fourth & Heart or Pure Indian Foods Organic Cultured Ghee)

  • 1/2 teaspoon honey or maple syrup (I’ve been using this recently, since it’s local and I love the slightly floral flavor)

  • 8 to 10 ounces hot coffee, brewed to your preference

Add the MCT, ghee, and sweetener to your mug, then pour in the coffee slowly, while blending with an immersion blender or electric frother. Be careful that your coffee doesn’t slosh over the sides of your mug—the end result should be delicious and creamy!

To make the protein coffee:

From here, you can either drink half with your breakfast and supplement with 190° water (as I do) or pour your Bulletproof Coffee into a larger mug, and add the protein powder.

I love Kelly Leveque’s protein powders (as with everything here, I don’t get any products free/discounted and have no brand deal with her—just a genuine fan!). I reheat then pour the remainder of my coffee into a to-go mug, then add a scoop of the Pumpkin Spice Protein or Chai Spice Protein to the coffee. I blend with an electric frother while carefully adding the hot water—it may look like it’s way too much powder, but then it turns silky and smooth!

Literally every morning

Enjoy and let me know what you think, or if you have a different method of making your own protein coffee!
